THE LEGAL STATUS OF MARITIME INTERNAL WATERS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF INTERNATIONAL LAW AND THE SECURITY REASONS OF THE STATE

This article analyses the legal status of maritime internal waters from the perspective of international law and the security reasons of the state. Maritime internal waters are addressed in the international agreements codifying the law of the sea adopted under the auspices of the United Nations after the Second World War. Two institutions of international law of the sea, that is the status of historic bays and straight baselines systems, were discussed in detail as they are mainly responsible for extension of maritime internal waters of the coastal states. The institutions of international law mentioned above were then discussed from the perspective of the mutual influence exerted on the security issues of the coastal state.
